The Weatheralls Primary School

Art & Design

Philosophy

Our aim is for all children to master learning skills that bring a love of learning, achievement, confidence and independence, in order for them to be the designers of their future. We will work with our partners to learn, develop and improve. The Shade and its community will encourage a caring and respectful attitude, take pride in our roots and celebrate our successes.

In Art and Design we aim to provide all children with the opportunity to express themselves imaginatively, creatively and develop their understanding of, and respond to the world around them. Pupils are exposed to many visual, tactile and sensory experiences. We encourage pupils to become involved in, enjoy and appreciate the visual arts and how it can enrich their personal lives.

Aims

We aim to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Art & Design skills may be taught through a topic or it may be a stand-alone unit in order to cover the specific skills and knowledge required. The subject lends itself well to a cross- curricular approach and it can enhance understanding in other subjects such as History or Maths (e.g. symmetry, pattern).

Our aim for Art & Design is to ensure that all pupils:

  • Produce creative work, explore ideas and record their experiences.
  • Become proficient if drawing painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • Know about artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
